    Maryland Phen Fen Lawyers

Fen Phen refers to the combination of fenfluramine or dexfenfluramine with phentermine. Fen Phen was marketed in the 1990's as a weight loss solution. In the summer of 1999, the Mayo Clinic announced that 24 patients had developed heart valve disease after taking Fen Phen. Under pressure from the FDA and the public, the manufacturer of the drugs (Pondimin and Redux), American Home Products Corporation, withdrew them from the market. Thousands of individual lawsuits and multiple class-actions were filed in federal and state courts across the country. In late 1997, all federal Fen Phen cases were transferred to Pennsylvania to better coordinate pre-trial proceedings through a multi-district litigation. Under federal law, most people are automatically included in the nation-wide class action settlement that resulted, unless they chose to "opt out". This means that individuals with valid claims could only seek pre-defined compensation unless they filled out a form and submitted it to the court-specified address. The initial "opt out" deadline has passed. However, the settlement agreement contains an intermediate "opt out" deadline and a "back-end opt out" period for individuals meeting certain requirements. As a result, you may still have the right to pursue an individual lawsuit for the full amount of compensatory damages as well as punitive damages against American Home Products Corporation. Our Maryland Fen Phen Lawyers can determine whether you can still file a lawsuit for your case.

The common use of the popular Fen Phen diet drugs, including Redux and Pondimin, has led to an unprecedented number of new Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH) cases over the last 10 years. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) removed these popular diet drugs from the marketplace in 1997 because of links to Primary Pulmonary Hypertension and other dangerous heart conditions such as mitral and aortic valve regurgitation.

If you have taken Redux or Pondimin and have experienced any of the following medical conditions, you should seek medical attention immediately.

    Symptoms of Primary Pulmonary Hypertension

    • Fatigue
    • Fainting
    • Lightheadedness with upright posture
    • Dizziness
    • Coughing up blood
    • Progressive shortness of breath with activity
    • Hyperventilation
    • Chest pain under the sternum
    • Weakness

Pulmonary hypertension is a condition which develops as a response to increased resistance to blood flow. Diffuse narrowing of the pulmonary arterioles occurs. The right side of the heart becomes enlarged due to the increased work load of pumping blood against this resistance. Eventually, progressive heart failure develops.

Historically, people at risk of developing Primary Pulmonary Hypertension were women between 20 and 40 years old, although the disease can affect males and females of any age. The incidence occurs in approximately 8 out of 100,000 people. PPH is rare in children, but what is more common is pulmonary hypertension in infants with persistent fetal circulation. Our Maryland Fen Phen Lawyers can help you win the compensation you deserve.
